I joined Quantexa in January 2023 as a Data Engineer in Research and Development, working in a fast-paced environment focused on large-scale data processing, analytics, and entity resolution. From the outset, my role sat at the intersection of data engineering, platform reliability, and applied research, contributing to systems designed to support complex analytical use cases across multiple industries. What drew me to the role was not just the technical challenge, but the emphasis on contextual understanding and the idea that better decisions emerge from well-designed data systems.

Since joining, my work has consistently spanned both day-to-day operational stability and longer-term systems design with the goal of making critical infrastructure scalable, predictable, and resilient. Across the period from mid-2023 through early 2026, I have raised and delivered changes across multiple internal codebases and workflows, with a strong emphasis on keeping critical pipelines dependable, traceable, and easy for other teams to use. The volume of delivery—hundreds of pull requests and tickets—reflects not just sustained output, but a clear evolution from targeted fixes into owning whole slices of the execution and support ecosystem.

Early Contributions and Foundation Building

In my early time at Quantexa, much of my work focused on pragmatic, high-leverage engineering in the critical path. This included developing, testing, and documenting data engineering tools and best practices, as well as delivering fast, targeted fixes to keep environments stable and releases moving. Many of these changes were small in isolation—correcting document and label wiring in scoring descriptions, safely reverting problematic schema adjustments, keeping downstream behaviour correct under release pressure—but high impact in practice, requiring careful reasoning about schemas, metadata, configuration, and how changes propagate through distributed data workflows. This period established a strong foundation in production-grade data engineering and gave me deep exposure to how complex systems behave outside ideal conditions.

Alongside this, I rapidly expanded my technical breadth. Although Scala was relatively new to me when I joined, I invested heavily in mastering it as a core language for large-scale data processing. This translated into tangible contributions that influenced sprint work, code quality, and performance, and complemented my existing experience with Python and Java. My broader knowledge of big data technologies, particularly Spark, distributed storage, and search and indexing systems, became increasingly central to defining and reinforcing best practices across the engineering organisation.

Operational Reliability and Release Correctness

As my scope widened, my work shifted increasingly toward operational reliability and release correctness across end-to-end data pipelines. This included ensuring that scheduled workflows behaved consistently across environments, that execution paths remained aligned with expectations as upstream conventions evolved, and that releases did not drift from runtime realities. Tasks like keeping live indices and release branch behaviour consistent, updating raw input paths as data sources changed, and switching live indices for data sources on release lines reflected hands-on ownership of changes that directly affect what data is served and how it is accessed in real environments.

Rather than treating pipeline failures or regressions as isolated issues, I focused on identifying systemic causes such as shared state, concurrency effects, retry semantics, and resource pressure in distributed execution. This required deep engagement with Airflow for orchestration and Spark running on cloud-native platforms, as well as careful analysis of failure modes that only surface at scale.

Airflow Infrastructure and ETL Development

I have led significant improvements to the Airflow-based ETL infrastructure. This includes a major redesign of the Dataproc logger to reduce Cloud Logging API overuse, implementing lightweight logging paths for successful jobs while preserving verbose diagnostics for failures. I successfully migrated the ETL platform from Airflow 1.x to 2.7, ensuring compatibility across all data sources while coordinating DAG health checks and reserialisation processes after promotions.

My work on dynamic DAG helpers introduced a modular architecture with utility classes, comprehensive type hints, and improved error handling. These helpers now comply with pre-commit standards including black, isort, and flake8 formatting. I also implemented VM and job labelling for better resource tracking and cost attribution, and optimised cluster configurations including boot size consistency, YARN attempt limits, and Spark compression codecs.

A key innovation was developing a dynamic DAG generator that allows ETL pipelines to be defined directly from configuration, significantly reducing friction when creating or modifying workflows. My longer-term vision is to evolve this into a more visual, user-friendly interface that empowers data engineers to design, validate, and deploy pipelines without needing deep familiarity with orchestration internals. This reflects a broader commitment to building tools that democratise complex infrastructure rather than concentrating knowledge in a few individuals.

Incident Response and Root-Cause Analysis

A major and recurring theme in my work has been incident response combined with deep root-cause analysis. I regularly investigated production-impacting failures where jobs degraded from minutes to hours or aborted entirely due to transient errors, timeouts, or infrastructure instability. Instead of relying on manual reruns, I worked to classify failure patterns, improve observability, and introduce safer execution behaviours.

Specific examples include addressing Elasticsearch load issues such as circuit breaking exceptions and client timeouts during orphaned-record cleanup, investigating Dataproc executor failures involving exit codes and YARN container eviction patterns, and resolving Airflow scheduler instabilities caused by Celery worker memory issues and Redis initialisation race conditions. A notable investigation involved diagnosing intermittent Dataproc failures with exit codes -100 and -143, identifying preemptible VM reclamation patterns and configuring Enhanced Flexibility Mode appropriately. I also traced Airflow log flakiness to an upstream race condition in Redis initialisation, implementing increased timeout configurations as a workaround.

This work extended to deep operational ownership in development environments, including diagnosing worker resource and memory pressure, log API quota constraints, and producing prescriptive guidance for memory sizing and stabilisation. The goal throughout has been making pipelines more resilient without constant human intervention.

Building Self-Service Batch Operations

One of my flagship contributions has been architecting a self-service batch operations platform that enables R&D teams to safely request and execute ETL and Batch Resolver jobs through Slack workflows. This system features an intelligent Slack bot that processes workflow messages with approval and rejection flows, generates dynamic run cards with storage paths and index lookup commands, and integrates with Airflow for job orchestration. The platform includes immutable resolver configuration snapshots for version control and comprehensive input validation to ensure workflow reliability. The target outcomes include a median request-to-run time of under two minutes after approval, at least 95% successful self-service runs, and a 50% reduction in debugging time.

This is representative of a broader pattern in my work: reducing ambiguity about what ran, where, and with which version; tightening feedback loops through notifications and run cards; and ensuring that operational execution is auditable and reproducible rather than dependent on tribal knowledge.

DataOps as a Product

Over time, this reliability work naturally converged into taking on a broader DataOps function, treating it as a product rather than an informal support role. My role expanded beyond building pipelines to ensuring that the entire data lifecycle was reliable, observable, and increasingly automated. This meant running and supporting daily operations—scheduled ETLs, batch processing, entity resolution, and downstream reporting—while simultaneously designing processes that scale and can be made self-service for others.

I initiated and drove foundational efforts to make operational work visible and measurable, capturing the otherwise hidden cost of manual intervention across R&D. By formalising workflows, improving automation, and clarifying ownership boundaries, I helped reduce ad-hoc requests and improve predictability for both engineers and stakeholders. In parallel, I contributed to broader developer productivity initiatives, addressing build and CI friction, improving pipeline reliability standards, and helping teams work more effectively with shared infrastructure.

The balance has been between immediate operational stability and longer-term structural improvements that reduce operational load over time. This shift marks a move from solving individual problems to creating the structure that prevents the same classes of problems from recurring.

Data Source ETL Pipeline Work

I have contributed extensively to ETL pipelines for multiple data sources. For D&B, I investigated and fixed country filtering bugs and updated documentation for ISO code handling. For Orbis, I resolved Parquet ETL date parsing issues, implemented year ingest fixes, and configured validation thresholds for large-scale cluster execution. I expanded OpenSanctions schema handling for new entity types and investigated performance issues affecting documents with excessively large nested arrays.

I supported parser version testing across multiple releases, running baseline ETL and Batch Resolver tests to validate compatibility. I also led regression testing for various data sources following major platform decoupling efforts, ensuring that changes did not introduce unexpected behaviour in downstream systems.

Developer Experience and Mentorship

Developer experience has been a consistent focus of my work. I created comprehensive AI coding guidelines for internal repositories, establishing standards for AI-assisted development across the team. This initiative forms part of a broader effort including the publication of standardised DataOps guidelines and the creation of onboarding guides for new team members.

In October 2024, I was promoted to Senior Data Engineer within Research and Development. In this role, I lead complex data engineering initiatives and contribute to architectural decisions across the data platform. A notable focus has been on designing and optimising scalable pipelines using Airflow and Spark on cloud infrastructure, with particular attention to performance, automation, and cost-efficient resource usage.

Mentorship has become an important part of my role. I support junior engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and hands-on guidance, particularly around distributed systems, Scala, and Python. I place strong emphasis on clear documentation and shared understanding, both to raise overall engineering quality and to ensure that systems are approachable for engineers with different backgrounds and working styles.

CI/CD and Infrastructure Improvements

My CI/CD pipeline work includes implementing shadow JAR uploads to cloud storage, fixing release pipeline version bumping issues, and switching deployments to new standardised pipelines. I integrated release pipelines with generic deployment systems and ensured proper DAG promotion workflows across development and production environments. I also investigated build optimisations and worked on consolidating script improvements and schema unification within the core platform.

Advocacy and Inclusive Practices

Alongside my technical work, I am a strong advocate for neurodiversity and inclusive engineering practices, particularly for ADHD and dyslexic perspectives. I bring this into my work by prioritising clarity, accessible documentation, and structured processes that reduce unnecessary cognitive load. I believe that inclusive systems are not just fairer, but more robust and more maintainable over time.

Technical Contributions by the Numbers

Throughout my tenure, I have worked on over 480 Jira tickets and authored nearly 380 pull requests across multiple repositories spanning platform infrastructure, data pipelines, CI/CD systems, and documentation. I have owned or created nine epics spanning self-service operations, incident management, automated incremental ETL frameworks, and infrastructure packaging. My contributions span Python for Airflow DAGs and automation scripts, Scala for ETL pipelines and Spark jobs, Groovy for CI/CD pipelines, and configuration languages for infrastructure management.

This work has been executed across cloud infrastructure including managed Spark clusters, distributed storage, identity-aware proxies, and logging systems, with deep integration into container orchestration for workload management and search platforms for data indexing and cluster management.

Summary

Overall, my work at Quantexa reflects a progression from hands-on delivery to ownership of broader problem spaces: data pipeline reliability, execution automation, developer productivity, and DataOps maturity. Across all of this, my focus has been on building systems that are predictable, observable, and resilient—”boring” in the best possible sense—so that teams can trust the foundations beneath them and focus their energy on higher-value analytical and product work.
